KodaKoda was in an animal shelter two hours from death; he had heartworm and the shelter could not justify him taking up needed space. We took him into foster because he is such a nice young boy. He is about 2 years old and still VERY healthy in spite of the heartworm. Our vet guesses he was infected about a year ago. Koda started heartworm treatment April 19. I brought him back home April 20. He was a bit reticent. Maybe he was uncertain how long he would be here. He had just been in a small cage for a day and a half at the vet’s office. He is considered to be in treatment till the end of May. This young boy is very skinny, weighing around 85 Lb and stands 29 inches tall. Koda is gentle and doesn’t even touch me when he is given meat. He recently had what may well have been his first bone. (I say this because it took him a while to figure what to do with it). He has yet to show any possessiveness for anything. The other male Malamute living here (Parry) has a problem with Koda. Parry demands that Koda submit to him. Koda will avert his eyes, lower his head and turn away, but nothing more. He won't meet the challenge with a growl nor any fight. That Koda will neither submit nor fight, Parry feels obliged to demand his submission frequently, to no avail. On walks, Koda pulls a bit, but not too badly. He learns quickly what one wants him to do. He is very eager to please and to have fun. Koda is clean in the house and has yet to show a destructive side of himself. It needs to be said that it is very early in his fostering. He is sometime from feeling secure here, what with Parry challenging him and all. Still, he is doing everything right if he wants to find a good home. Koda promises to be an exceptional family member.
